Most NYCHA residents are not aware that the building they reside in has their apartment number outside. Under the first floor of every window is a letter that indicates what apartment this is on a corresponding floor. For example, if a letter B is located on the ground level than this would be Apt 1B. If the letter is an F that every window above is an F apt (1F, 2F, 3F etc.) The alphanumerical system is on every ground level window in NYCHA. If you intend to be lowkey than it would be wise not to be standing near windows in your apartment for anyone in plain sight to see because they will know exactly what apartment you are in. Be mindful next time you peak or poke your head out of the window.

This layout may also be helpful for police in nabbing bad guys. By merely peering into windows with or without flashlights they can see possible suspects and instantly know what apartment to go to. Awareness is key and although some may not have a problem with it, there may be countless others that will perhaps feel as though their rights are being violated. Knowledge is power!
