THE AFRICAN MAN WHO WAS A CAGED EXHIBIT AT THE BRONX ZOO WITH THE MONKEYS!

The African Ota Benga

Ota Benga born in 1883 was a Congolese Mbuti Pygmy. He was sold into slavery and was the slave of Samuel Phillips Verner. He was eventually placed in a cage alongside monkeys as part of an exhibit at the Bronx Zoo. His teeth were shaved to give him a more appealing look for the spectacle and visitors were encouraged to pay five cents to take pictures. He was instructed to use his bow and arrow to hit a target while spectators watched. He became very profitable for the zoo.

He had spent years in the monkey house and though he was tutored in English, he befriended the orangutan Dohong who was trained to do tricks and mimic humans for zoo goers. He was also part of an anthropology exhibit in St. Louis in 1903. He lived a life of depression and eventually committed suicide.
