Thomas Alexandre Dumas born in Haiti in 1762 was the first black man in the French army to achieve the levels of success accredited him through military campaigns. He is also the highest ranking man of African descent in any European army in the world. He commanded thousands of soldiers at a time and fought with both Napolean Bonaparte & Toussaint Louverture. He fought many battles from France to Egypt & was eventually imprisoned and placed in a dungeon. He was released in 1801 and fathered one of the greatest novel writers of our time. His son Alexandre Dumas used his life to create characters in his books:The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers & others.
Thomas was sent to France by his French father who was nobility. His mother was a slave. In France slavery was abolished and so he was able to be a free man and get a great education. His father helped him get into the military and it took him no time to fly through the ranks and eventually become one of the most decorated African soldiers in history.
